Deaf Social Life

The Deaf community are a vibrant and eclectic group of talented people. Just like any culture group Deaf people enjoy socialising and are active members in their local community.

Sport

NZ Deaf people love sport and there are many Deaf sports competitions held at a local, regional and national level.

It’s important that Deaf people have full and equal access to sporting and recreational services.

Deaf Sports Federation of New Zealand host a number of sporting events in New Zealand from the New Zealand Deaf Games, Inter-zonal Championships as well as being the official Federation for Deaf Sports for New Zealand at International events such as the Deaflympics.

Deaf Clubs

Deaf Clubs are an integral part of the Deaf community. The clubs are committed to providing a community base where members can meet and participate in educational, sport, social and recreational activities.

New Zealand has several Deaf Clubs or Deaf Societies, and each club has their own memberships, newsletters and social functions. Their membership is separate from our Deaf Aotearoa membership.

Senior Citizens

In bigger cities, there are regular gatherings for Deaf Senior Citizens at the Auckland Deaf Society (in Balmoral) and Canterbury Deaf Society (in Christchurch city). For more details contact the Auckland Deaf Society or Canterbury Deaf Society or the local Deaf Aotearoa office.
